A handbrake is one of the most “feel” sensitive sim racing accessories. If it’s mounted 3 cm too far away, you’ll miss it under pressure. If it’s too low, you’ll pull it with your shoulder instead of your wrist. And if it’s not calibrated properly, you’ll either lock rears instantly—or not get enough bite when you need it.
This guide covers the MOZA HBP handbrake, but the principles apply to any analog handbrake.
Mounting height: the simplest rule that works
Set your handbrake so your elbow stays close to your body when you pull. If your elbow flares outward, you’ll lose precision and consistency.
Most drivers like one of these two positions:
- Rally style: slightly higher and closer to the wheel.
- Drift style: slightly lower and more forward (easier to grab during fast steering transitions).
Use a dedicated mount so you can adjust it without drilling or improvising brackets:

Calibration: make the “first 10%” usable
For most handbrake use, you don’t need 100% travel. You need a predictable, controllable first part of the travel.
Do this:
- Calibrate the axis in MOZA software.
- Add a tiny inside deadzone only if the lever doesn’t return to true zero.
- Set the outside deadzone so you can reach full handbrake without slamming the lever into the stop every time.
In-game deadzones: where to adjust for different sims
- Forza Horizon 6: use the Advanced Wheel Tuning deadzone inside/outside sliders for the handbrake axis.
- Assetto Corsa: check axis range and sensitivity in controls; keep it linear first, then tune.
- Rally titles: ensure the handbrake is mapped as analog (not just on/off), then add a small deadzone if needed.

Rig stability: why the handbrake “feels better” on a profile cockpit
Handbrake inputs are sharp. If your rig shifts when you pull the lever, you’ll overpull or underpull.
Even entry-level profile rigs solve this by fixing the seat and mounting. For handbrake-heavy playstyles, we recommend at least the SIMGASM Club. If you want the cleanest setup (and plan for more devices), choose the Sport with internal cable routing.
