Drifting is one of the best “wheel control” teachers in sim racing. It forces you to manage steering speed, throttle balance and countersteer timing. But drift setups can feel awful if your settings fight the technique.
This guide covers steering rotation, wheelbase filters, handbrake placement, and a drift-friendly rig layout using SIMGASM hardware.
Steering rotation for drifting
Many drift setups use 900° rotation to allow large countersteer angles and smoother corrections. If you struggle with “snappy” behaviour, increasing rotation can give you more control.
Wheelbase settings: what drift drivers usually want
- Fast return (the wheel should self-align quickly)
- Low latency feel (avoid heavy smoothing)
- Enough damping to prevent oscillation, but not so much that the wheel feels slow

Handbrake technique starts with placement
In drifting, the handbrake is often used to initiate or correct angle. Bad placement makes you late. Good placement makes you smooth.
- Mount it close: you shouldn’t have to lean forward.
- Mount it high enough: so your shoulder stays relaxed.

Rig posture: keep your upper body stable
Drifting involves rapid steering and frequent hand movement. You want your hips and shoulders stable:
- A comfortable seat that holds you in place (bucket or recline depending on preference).
- Wheel height that keeps elbows slightly bent at centre.
- Pedals positioned so you can modulate throttle without shifting in the seat.
