MOZA shifters compared: HGP vs SGP and the best cockpit mounting positions

MOZA shifters compared: HGP vs SGP and the best cockpit mounting positions

Shifters are one of those upgrades that don’t make you faster in one lap—but they can make you more consistent, more immersed, and better at real driving technique. If you’re in the MOZA ecosystem, the big question is usually:

  • Do you want an H-pattern shifter for road cars and classic racing?
  • Or a sequential shifter for rally, GT, touring cars and modern race cars?

This guide compares the MOZA shifters, explains where to mount them, and shows how to build an ergonomic layout on a SIMGASM cockpit.

HGP vs SGP: what each is best for

Product Best for Why
MOZA HGP shifter Road cars, classic racing, drifting with clutch H-pattern technique and muscle memory
MOZA SGP sequential shifter Rally, touring cars, many modern race cars Fast, consistent shifts with minimal hand travel

If you’re unsure, choose based on your main sim:

  • Rally / WRC / rallycross: sequential first.
  • Drift: H-pattern if you use clutch a lot; sequential if you drive modern drift cars or want simplicity.
  • GT racing: you may not need a shifter at all (paddles), but sequential can still be great for immersion.

Mounting position: the difference between “fun” and “awkward”

Shifter ergonomics matter more than people realize. A good shifter position is one where your hand drops naturally without rotating your shoulder.

On a profile rig, you can place the shifter in the correct zone and keep it there permanently. We recommend mounting on a dedicated bracket instead of improvising:

H-pattern technique: clutch and calibration basics

If you go H-pattern, set up your clutch properly so you build real technique instead of fighting mis-calibration.

Rigs that make shifter placement easy

Aluminium profile rigs are ideal for shifters because you can add or move mounts without drilling. Here’s the quick match:

  • Budget-friendly rig: Hobby
  • Most setups: Club
  • Cleanest and most adjustable: Sport (internal cable passthroughs)

Recommended shifter builds (MOZA + SIMGASM)

  • Rally build: sequential + handbrake on the shifter & handbrake mount
  • Drift build: H-pattern + handbrake, with the handbrake slightly forward and higher
  • Road car immersion build: H-pattern + Core Recline seat for comfort
