Simucube TrueDrive filters explained: what to change and why

TrueDrive is the reason many Simucube owners stay Simucube owners. It gives you enough control to make the wheel feel exactly the way you want, and it also gives you enough rope to confuse yourself.

This guide is a practical “what does this actually do?” explanation of the main TrueDrive filters, plus a simple tuning workflow that keeps you progressing instead of endlessly tweaking.

Start in Simple mode, then earn Advanced mode

If you’re new to Simucube, begin with the Simple profile view. It bundles multiple advanced filters into a small set of sliders (for example, smoothness and damping-style feel), which is a safer way to avoid over-tuning.

Once you have a baseline you like, switch to Advanced mode so you can control each effect separately.

The key TrueDrive filters, explained in human terms

Setting What it changes What it feels like Common mistake
Reconstruction filter Smooths and extrapolates low update-rate FFB signals Lower = more raw and fast, higher = smoother with slight compromise in immediacy Turning it up to hide a flexy rig (fix the rig instead)
Slew rate limit Limits how quickly torque can change More “rubbery”, less aggressive spikes Using too much and losing micro detail
Torque bandwidth Low-pass filter that removes high frequencies Less kerb harshness and grain Setting too low and creating laggy steering feel
Damping Resists rotation proportional to wheel speed Stability, less oscillation, calmer hands Over-damping until the wheel feels dead
Friction Constant resistive force regardless of speed More “mechanical” weight, less lightness Too high → heavy and tiring in endurance
Inertia Simulates a heavier rotating mass Smoother transitions and less twitch Too high → delayed corrections
Static force reduction Reduces static torque after a moment Power steering feel without killing road detail Too high → weight transfer feels confusing
Ultra low latency Internal processing adjustment aimed at reducing latency Can reduce oscillation with less damping Too much may create resonance in some sims

A tuning workflow that works (and stops you chasing your tail)

Step 1: Fix the platform before the profile

If your wheel deck or monitor wobbles, you’ll turn up filters to hide it. That’s the slow path. A stiff aluminium profile rig makes a “lower filter” setup possible, which usually feels more realistic.

Step 2: Set strength and steering range first

  • Pick a comfortable strength that you can hold for a full race distance.
  • Match steering range to the sim or use auto rotation/soft lock if available.

Step 3: Stabilise the wheel with the smallest possible dose

If the wheel oscillates on straights, add a little damping first. If it still oscillates, add a touch of friction. If it still feels twitchy, add a small amount of inertia.

Step 4: Smooth only what needs smoothing

Use reconstruction as your main “grain remover”. If kerbs are too sharp, use a small amount of torque bandwidth or a notch filter rather than turning everything into mush.

Baseline “starting point” values you can try

These are not universal “best settings”. They are a safe baseline to begin from on a rigid cockpit. Make one change at a time.

Use case Reconstruction Damping Friction Inertia Slew rate limit Torque bandwidth
Competitive GT / iRacing style 2–4 8–15% 0–8% 0–10% Off / low Off / high
Comfort endurance baseline 3–5 10–18% 3–10% 5–12% Low High
Rally / rough roads 3–6 10–20% 0–6% 0–8% Low–medium Medium

Where SIMGASM helps without being “brand pushy”

TrueDrive can make the wheel feel smoother. A well-designed aluminium profile cockpit makes the wheel feel truer. If you build on a stiff frame, you can run lower filters and still get a calm, realistic steering feel.

Two simple SIMGASM picks

  • SIMGASM Club (C80): a strong step up from entry rigs and compatible with almost all hardware.
  • SIMGASM Sport (C120): bigger footprint, cleaner routing, and more flexibility for accessories and future upgrades.
