“Clipping” is the #1 reason force feedback feels bad on good hardware. It’s also easy to fix once you know what you’re looking for.
Clipping happens when the sim tries to output more force than your settings allow. The wheel hits a ceiling and everything above it becomes the same “flat” force. The result: you lose the subtle differences between grip building and grip breaking.
How to spot clipping in real driving terms
- Kerbs all feel the same (big kerb vs small kerb = same hit)
- Long corners feel like a constant heavy force with no detail
- Understeer is hard to feel because forces don’t change progressively
The correct signal chain (simple and repeatable)
- Set the wheelbase to its true max torque (or a known cap). Don’t try to “fix” clipping by reducing wheelbase torque first.
- Set in-game gain so it never clips in your worst moments (kerbs + fast corners + bumps).
- Use car-specific multipliers if the sim supports it (some cars output more force than others).
- Only then add filtering/damping to solve oscillation or harshness.
Why a rigid cockpit matters for clipping
When your wheel deck flexes, you feel less detail. Many people respond by raising gain. That creates clipping and makes everything worse.

Practical “one corner” test (works in any sim)
- Pick one corner with a long, loaded apex (e.g., a fast right-hander).
- Run it at 90% pace. Feel the build-up and release of load.
- Now run it at 100% pace, including kerbs.
- If the steering feels like it “hits a wall” and becomes constant, lower gain.
Filtering is not a clipping fix
Filtering can make clipping feel less violent, but it doesn’t restore information. Use filtering for:
- Removing high-frequency noise
- Calming oscillation on straights
Use gain/multipliers for clipping.
How strong should FFB be?
