Three direct-drive sim racing wheelbases arranged in a torque-comparison lineup

Direct drive torque explained: how much Nm do you really need

Direct drive torque explained: how much Nm do you really need

Direct drive wheelbases have become the “default dream upgrade” in sim racing. But one question keeps coming back: how many Nm do you actually need?

The honest answer: it depends on your goals, your driving style, and how stable your cockpit is. Torque is not only about strength. It is about detail, control and the ability to run consistent settings without your rig moving around.

What does Nm mean for a sim racing wheelbase?

Nm (Newton-metre) is torque. In practice, it describes how much turning force your wheelbase can apply to the wheel rim. Higher numbers can deliver stronger forces and more headroom before clipping, but only if you can control them comfortably.

Torque tiers that make sense

Wheelbase torque What it feels like Who it suits
3–6 Nm Strong step up from entry belts/gears, easy to drive for long sessions Beginners, casual racers, smaller spaces
8–10 Nm More detail, better curb/weight transfer, still manageable Most sim racers, league racing
12–15 Nm High fidelity, strong forces, needs a rigid cockpit Competitive racers, endurance practice
18–25+ Nm Maximum headroom, realistic peaks, can be physically demanding Pros, motion/tactile builds, training focus

Key point: running a 20 Nm wheelbase at 10–12 Nm can feel better than running a 10 Nm wheelbase at 10 Nm, because you have more headroom and less clipping. But only if your cockpit and mounting are stable.

What your cockpit must handle with direct drive

When people say a rig is “strong enough”, they usually mean three things:

  • Wheel deck rigidity: no flex under peak steering loads.
  • Pedal stability: load cell pedals can exceed 60–100 kg of braking force; your pedal mount should not bend.
  • Seat and slider stability: your seat should not rock under braking or curb strikes.

Flex does not just feel “cheap”. It actively hides detail. The wheelbase spends energy bending your rig instead of communicating grip and tyre behaviour.

Match torque to the right SIMGASM simulator tier

SIMGASM rigs are designed as four clear tiers so you can buy what you need now and still have an upgrade path later:

  • Hobby: the entry option that is intentionally affordable, yet built to outperform typical rigs in its price category. A great start for 3–6 Nm, and it can handle more if you keep settings sensible. View the hobby simulator.
  • Club: upgraded stiffness thanks to a stronger profile platform (80×40 compared to Hobby’s 40×40). This tier is suitable for almost all peripherals on the market and is the sweet spot for 8–12 Nm builds. View the club simulator.
  • Sport: larger footprint (longer/wider), stronger wheel mount, more adjustability and a clean build philosophy. The internal cable routing uses multiple passthrough points so you can route cables front-to-back and up through the frame without messy clips. This tier is a strong match for high-end DD + load cells, and is motion-ready. View the sport simulator.
  • Pro: flagship stiffness and adjustability with a 160×40 profile platform and thick steel plates. Built for maximum forces and the cleanest upgrade flexibility when you plan motion, high torque and long-term expansion. View the pro simulator.

Quick checklist: are you ready to upgrade torque?

  • Can you drive a full race distance without pain or fatigue?
  • Does your wheel mount move when you hit a kerb?
  • Do your pedals slide or flex under heavy braking?
  • Is your monitor stable, or does it shake with force feedback?

If you answered “yes” to any instability, fix the cockpit first. Torque upgrades feel dramatically better when the whole system is solid.
