How to Upgrade a Modular Sim Racing Cockpit Without Starting Over

A genuinely modular sim-racing cockpit lets you change the parts around the driver without replacing the structure underneath. You can upgrade a wheelbase, change pedals, add a handbrake, move to multiple monitors or build a more specialised rally, endurance, streaming or truck setup one step at a time.

That upgrade path is a central SIMGASM design principle. When we develop a new product, we first look at how it can work with the cockpit families customers already own. If one component cannot safely cover every layout, we prefer a clearly identified variant, plate or adapter over a vague universal-fit claim.

The result is not a promise that every accessory fits every cockpit automatically. It is a commitment to keep the system expandable, publish the important dimensions and create a practical route forward when hardware changes.

Modularity starts with the chassis

Aluminium T-slot profile is useful because brackets and accessories can be repositioned along the slots. That makes the frame an adaptable foundation instead of a fixed collection of welded mounting points.

The profiles are only part of the story. A modular cockpit also needs sensible interface locations, accessible fasteners and enough adjustment after an accessory is installed. A mount that technically connects but blocks a seat slider, cable or adjustment bolt does not provide a good upgrade path.

SIMGASM therefore considers the complete assembly: the cockpit width, profile orientation, bracket geometry, equipment clearances and the load transferred into the frame. This approach applies across the Hobby, Club, Sport and Pro ranges, while the exact solution can differ between models.

One product when possible, a specific variant when necessary

The word “universal” is often used too easily in sim racing. Wheelbases can use bottom, front or side mounting. Pedals differ in length, hole pattern and cable position. Monitor installations depend on VESA pattern, screen size, mass and the position of the connection ports.

SIMGASM uses a simple rule: share a component across products where the measured interface allows it, and create a distinct solution where the geometry or load requires one.

That is why the range includes different wheel-mount architectures. The SIMGASM Front Wheelmount is intended for selected front-mount wheelbases. The SIMGASM Side Mount supports a different group of models. A bottom mount serves hardware designed to bolt through its underside. Customers get a defined fit instead of having to drill a new plate and hope that the housing still clears the frame.

The same principle guides future development. When new hardware uses an existing interface, compatibility may only require verification and an update to the live model list. When it introduces a genuinely different interface, a revised bracket, adapter or separate variant may be the responsible answer.

Cross-brand compatibility is based on measurements

Some SIMGASM accessories can also work on aluminium-profile cockpits from other manufacturers. This is most realistic when the receiving rig uses compatible profile and slot dimensions and leaves the required installation space.

Cross-brand fit should never be decided by appearance alone. Check at least:

  • profile dimensions, slot type and slot orientation;
  • inner or outer cockpit width at the mounting position;
  • hole pattern, bolt size and included fasteners;
  • the product's load, leverage and clearance requirements; and
  • the exact wheelbase, display, shifter or other device being attached.

For monitors, the VESA pattern is important but not sufficient on its own. The stand must also support the number, dimensions and mass of the screens, while allowing the required angle and viewing distance. For motion hardware, the actuator type, bracket interface and surrounding structure all matter. Upgrade paths for different types of driver

A starter setup may begin with a compact cockpit, one monitor and a bottom-mounted wheelbase. Its next useful upgrades could be a seat slider, a stronger pedal setup and a separate monitor stand. None of those changes should force the driver to discard the entire chassis.

An endurance driver may add a button box, keyboard tray, shifter, headphones hook and triple displays. A rally driver may prioritise a sequential shifter and handbrake in an ergonomic position. A truck driver can need a round wheel, lower steering position, indicator controls and extra screens. A streamer may add camera, lighting and control surfaces while keeping cables away from the pedal area.

These builds do not need one oversized “everything” bracket. They need stable attachment points and components that can be positioned around the user. The SIMGASM accessories and add-ons range is developed around that staged approach.

Can an add-on save money without sacrificing quality?

An accessory does not have to carry the same logo as the cockpit to be a good choice. A cross-brand monitor stand or peripheral mount can sometimes cost less than a brand-locked alternative while meeting the same practical requirement.

Compare like for like. Look at material thickness, supported dimensions, included hardware, adjustment range, load guidance and finish—not only the product name or headline price. Also include adapters and shipping in the total cost. The least expensive item is not better value if it needs modification or limits the next upgrade.

What support remains available after an upgrade?

Keeping earlier cockpit generations useful is part of product development, not an afterthought. Where a new part does not directly fit an existing configuration, the team evaluates whether another variant, adapter or replacement interface can solve the difference safely.

That evaluation still has limits. An adapter must not create an unsafe load path, interfere with adjustment or make the installed device unusable. Availability, price and lead time can also differ for current, legacy and made-to-order components.

A five-point check before buying an add-on

First, identify the exact cockpit and hardware variants. Second, check the live compatibility list and all published dimensions. Third, confirm that the accessory leaves space for the seat, pedals, cables and normal adjustment. Fourth, compare the expected load with the intended use. Finally, ask before ordering if any part of the combination is not documented.

That process preserves the main advantage of a modular cockpit: the ability to evolve without starting again.

Is a product described as universal guaranteed to fit any rig?

No. “Universal” still has dimensional and load limits. The published measurements and exact device list take priority over the general label.

Is it cheaper to upgrade a cockpit than replace it?

Often, yes, because a suitable mount or accessory preserves the main chassis. The real comparison should include the component, any adapter, shipping, installation work and the remaining upgrade path.
