Is the SIMGASM Hobby worth it with a Logitech wheel?

Yes, for most Logitech owners the SIMGASM Hobby is worth it. Even a gear driven G29 or G923 with about 2.3 Nm gains a lot from a fixed frame, because the pedals stop sliding, the chair stops rolling and the wheel stops wobbling on the desk. The Hobby also leaves room to grow: the Logitech RS50 (8 Nm) and G Pro (11 Nm) both stay well under its 16 Nm guidance, and every Logitech base bolts on with the Bottom Mount.

In this article you see why a light wheel still needs a stable base, what changes for each Logitech model and how the setup bolts together. We also tell you when it makes more sense to spend on a new wheel first.

Why a low torque wheel still needs a stable base

Many people think a cockpit only matters for strong direct drive bases, but the weak point of a Logitech setup is often somewhere else.

The pedals are the real weak point

The brake pedal on a G29 or G923 feels firm, and you need to push it hard to brake late. On a carpet or a wooden floor, the whole pedal unit slides forward under that force. You lose your reference, so you brake too early or too late. Bolted to the pedal deck of a cockpit, the pedals stay in place. That alone often makes your braking more consistent within a few sessions.

Desks and clamps soak up the detail

A gear driven wheel sends small, quick signals through the rim. When the clamp or tabletop flexes, part of that detail disappears. On an aluminium profile frame, the base sits on a solid plate, so you feel more of what the car does. The wheel does not get stronger, but it feels cleaner.

Your seating position becomes repeatable

A fixed seat puts your hips, hands and feet in the same place every time. That makes your muscle memory work for you. For a new driver, this is one of the fastest ways to gain time.

What changes with each Logitech wheel?

The gain differs per model, so here is a short look at the three main Logitech bases.

G29 and G923: gear driven, about 2.3 Nm

These wheels are the classic first step into sim racing. On the Hobby, the biggest win sits in the pedals and the seat. The frame is far stronger than these wheels need, which is good news: you keep it when you upgrade.

RS50: 8 Nm direct drive

The RS50 brings direct drive to the Logitech range. With 8 Nm, a desk clamp starts to struggle in fast corners. On the Hobby, the base has a hard mount, so you get the full detail of direct drive.

G Pro: 11 Nm direct drive

The G Pro is the strongest Logitech base. At 11 Nm it needs a proper frame, and the Hobby handles it well within its guidance. If you also run load cell pedals and brake very hard, look at the pedal deck rating as well, which we explain below.

How a Logitech wheel mounts on the Hobby

Bolting your Logitech gear onto the Hobby takes only a few steps.

All Logitech bases use the Bottom Mount, where the base bolts on from underneath. The pedals go on the pedal deck. The Hobby also comes with the Core side profile arm for a shifter or handbrake, so a Logitech Driving Force Shifter has a fixed home next to your seat. The full list of mounts per brand is in our guide which wheelbases fit the SIMGASM Hobby.

Once the hardware sits right, the software matters too. Our Logitech G29, G923 and G Pro settings guide helps you set rotation and force feedback for your favourite games.

About the pedal deck: the Hobby has a rated braking load of 150 kg. That is plenty for the stock Logitech pedals. If you plan to push a very stiff load cell brake to its maximum every lap, the Club with 200 kg gives extra reserve.

From a Logitech wheel to a SIMGASM frame

The step from a Logitech wheel to a real frame is one the SIMGASM founder made himself.

Johan Akkerman started sim racing in 2008 with Gran Turismo and a controller. He saved for a basic wheel, moved on to a Logitech G25 and later won the G27 in an esports competition. He went on to win the 2019 Project CARS 2 world team championship with VP Gaming. When frames were still expensive, he welded his own from used gas pipes. Today he designs the full SIMGASM range, from the 3D models to the final inspection of materials and finishes. The Hobby is the result of that path: a real aluminium frame for drivers who start out, made by someone who started out the same way.

When to buy a new wheel first

A cockpit is not always the first upgrade.

If your Logitech wheel is broken, or you already know you want direct drive within weeks, a new base might come first. The same is true if you race only a few times a month and have a solid desk and a chair without wheels. Our guide sim rig or wheelbase first helps you decide. In most other cases, a frame is the upgrade you feel every lap, and it stays when your wheel changes. Browse the SIMGASM Hobby or the full range of sim racing cockpits to compare.

A seat slider is a smart extra if more people use the setup. It lets each driver set the pedal distance in seconds.

Questions about a Logitech wheel on the Hobby

Here are quick answers to common Logitech questions.

Does a G29 fit on the SIMGASM Hobby?

Yes. The G29 bolts onto the Bottom Mount and its pedals go on the pedal deck.

Is the Hobby overkill for a G923?

No. The G923 needs little frame strength, but its pedals and your seat position gain a lot. And the frame stays useful when you upgrade to direct drive.

Does the Hobby handle the Logitech G Pro?

Yes. The G Pro gives 11 Nm, which is within the 16 Nm guidance of the Hobby.

Where do I mount a Logitech shifter?

On the Core side profile arm that comes with the Hobby. It sits next to the seat at a natural height.
