How do you tune LMU Hypercar dampers?

You tune LMU Hypercar dampers by adjusting slow bump and slow rebound for how the car pitches and rolls, and fast bump and fast rebound for how it handles kerbs and bumps. Bump controls how quickly a corner compresses, rebound controls how quickly it extends again. Make small changes, one corner pair at a time, and judge them on balance and stability over a full stint.

Dampers feel like the most mysterious part of the garage. In reality they follow a few simple rules. Once you know those rules, dampers become a precise tool to fine tune the balance you built with springs, anti roll bars and aero.

What dampers do on a Hypercar

Before you touch a single click, it helps to know what the four damper settings control.

Bump and rebound in plain words

A spring decides how far the car moves. A damper decides how fast it gets there. Bump, also called compression, slows the suspension as it gets squeezed together. Rebound slows the suspension as it pushes back out. More clicks mean more resistance, so the movement becomes slower and more controlled.

Think of a door with a soft closer. A light closer lets the door slam, a heavy one makes it crawl. Dampers work the same way for every corner of your Hypercar.

Slow and fast damping

LMU splits each direction into slow and fast settings. Slow damping covers the slow body movements: weight moving forward under braking, backwards under power and sideways in a corner. Fast damping covers quick hits, like a kerb strike or a sharp bump at 300 km/h.

This split is useful. You control the balance through corners with the slow settings, and the ride over kerbs with the fast settings, without one ruining the other.

How slow damping shapes the balance

Slow damping mainly changes how the car behaves while weight moves around during a corner.

Corner entry and braking

Under braking, the front compresses and the rear extends. More front slow bump slows the nose dive and keeps the front aero more stable. More rear slow rebound holds the rear down longer, which adds stability on entry. Too much of either makes the car feel stiff and lazy to turn in.

Hypercars race without ABS, so a stable platform under braking also helps you avoid locked wheels. Our guide on how to avoid lock ups in the Hypercar covers the driving side of that story.

Corner exit and traction

On exit, weight moves to the rear. Softer rear slow bump lets the rear squat a little and find traction. Softer front slow rebound lets the nose rise gently instead of springing up and losing front grip. If the car pushes wide on exit, look at these two settings first.

A simple rule helps here. Slow settings work like a softer or stiffer anti roll bar, but only while the car is moving. Once the car settles mid corner, the springs and bars take over again. Our guide to packers on an LMU Hypercar explains what happens at the very bottom of that travel.

How fast damping handles kerbs and bumps

Fast damping decides whether the car rides over trouble or bounces off it.

Signs your fast damping is too stiff

The car jumps over kerbs, the steering kicks hard in your hands and the tyres lose contact for a moment. On bumpy tracks like Sebring, a stiff fast bump makes the car skip across the surface. Lower fast bump a few clicks and the tyres stay in touch with the track.

Signs your fast damping is too soft

The car wallows after a kerb, keeps bouncing and takes a long time to settle. At high speed, a soft fast rebound lets the floor oscillate, which upsets the aero platform. Add fast rebound in small steps until the car settles after one movement.

A safe order to tune dampers

Dampers are fine tuning, so they come last in your setup work.

Set the base first

Get your wing, ride height, springs and anti roll bars close first. The Le Mans Ultimate hypercar setup guide walks you through those big settings. Only then start with dampers, because they cannot fix a car that is wrong at its core.

Change one thing and repeat the same laps

Change two or three clicks on one axle, then drive at least five clean laps at the same fuel load. Damper changes are subtle, so a consistent driving position matters. Our founder Johan Akkerman races on the SIMGASM Sport, a cockpit with a 40 by 120 mm main profile built for serious direct drive and load cell builds. SIMGASM treats seating position, wheel angle and pedal geometry as performance factors, not cosmetic details. That consistency lets you feel a two click change. Compare every racing simulator cockpit in the range to find yours.

Questions about LMU damper tuning

Here are short answers to the damper questions that come up most often.

Should rebound be stiffer than bump?

Often, yes. Many setups run more rebound than bump, because rebound controls how the car settles after a movement. Use that as a starting point, not as a law.

How many clicks should I change at once?

Two or three clicks on one axle is a good step. Bigger jumps make it hard to tell what changed, smaller ones are often too subtle to feel.

Do dampers affect tyre wear?

Yes. Dampers that are too stiff make the tyres slide and skip, which adds heat and wear. A compliant car keeps the tyres in contact and kinder to them over a long stint.

Are damper settings the same for every Hypercar?

No. Each car has its own weight, aero and suspension design. Use the same method on every car, but expect different numbers.
