Thrustmaster T300, T248 and T818 wheel settings guide

Thrustmaster T300, T248 and T818 wheel settings guide

Thrustmaster wheels cover a huge range: from the belt driven T300, to the hybrid T248, to the direct drive T818. The fundamentals are the same: a stable mount, a sensible steering angle, and a force feedback signal that is not clipped or over filtered.

This guide gives you starting settings that feel natural in most sims, plus the tuning logic so you can adapt them to your driving style.

Step 1: mount first, then tune

Most “bad force feedback” complaints are actually mounting problems: a desk that flexes, a wheel clamp that shifts, or a chair that moves under braking.

Thrustmaster control panel baselines (T300 and T248)

These values are designed to keep the signal clean and let the sim do the work.

Control panel setting Suggested starting point Notes
Overall strength 75–100% Start lower if the wheel overheats or feels “spiky”.
Constant 100% Keep full detail.
Periodic 100% Keep full detail.
Spring 0% Let the sim generate centering forces.
Damper 0–10% Only add if the wheel feels unstable on straights.
Auto center By the game Prevents double centering forces.

Thrustmaster T818 (direct drive) baselines

The T818 has more torque and response than belt driven wheels. Treat it like a DD wheel: avoid clipping, keep extra effects low, and use light damping for stability.

  • Overall strength: start medium, then tune in game.
  • Damping: low to medium.
  • Smoothing: low; only add if the signal feels grainy.

In game tuning: iRacing and ACC

iRacing: set wheel force correctly, use Auto once, then reduce slightly if you clip in your biggest corners. Many drivers run iRacing too strong and wonder why it feels “flat”.

ACC: start with gain around 60–75, keep road effects low so kerbs do not dominate, and keep minimum force low (especially on T818).

Steering angle shortcuts that work

  • GT / road cars: 540–900° (start 900° and use soft lock)
  • Formula cars: 360–450°
  • Rally/drift: 900°

Troubleshooting (fast fixes)

  • Wheel feels notchy or rattly: lower overall strength, remove extra road effects, and check that your wheel clamp or mount is not vibrating.
  • Overheating on T300: run slightly lower strength and use the wheel’s forced cooling mode if available.
  • Strong centering spring feeling: set spring to 0 in the control panel and ensure auto center is “by the game”.
  • Feels vague around center: reduce damping and increase in game strength slightly, but check for clipping.

When to upgrade

If you are chasing consistency, upgrade in this order:

  1. Rig stability (cockpit + wheel mount)
  2. Pedals (load cell brake)
  3. Wheelbase (DD for extra headroom and detail)
