Rotation is one of the most misunderstood “settings” in sim racing. People often jump between 360°, 540° and 900° without knowing what they’re changing, then wonder why the car feels twitchy or slow.

This guide gives you a simple method to set rotation and soft lock for an Asetek wheelbase so you can move between sims without constantly relearning steering.

What rotation really changes

  • Steering sensitivity: lower rotation means smaller hand movement for the same in-game steering.
  • Precision: higher rotation can make fine inputs easier (especially in long corners), but can feel slow in quick direction changes.
  • Muscle memory: if rotation changes every time, your consistency drops.

A practical rotation table (starting points)

The clean method: one wheelbase setting, soft lock per sim

If you play multiple sims, try this:

  1. Set your wheelbase to a high maximum rotation (e.g., 900°).
  2. Use the sim’s steering lock / soft lock to match the car.
  3. Test by turning to full lock: the in-game wheel should align with your real wheel.

This keeps your hardware consistent while the sim handles car-specific steering ratios.

Why a rigid rig helps with rotation consistency

Lower rotation usually means you make smaller, sharper inputs. If your wheel deck flexes, those tiny inputs can get “lost” in the structure and feel vague.

  • “I run out of steering angle in hairpins”: rotation/lock mismatch. Make sure the sim and wheelbase agree on max lock.
  • “Counter-steer feels delayed”: check for too much damping/friction, and verify your rig isn’t flexing under load.

iRacing and ACC quick notes

iRacing: most cars handle steering range automatically if your wheelbase is set correctly and you calibrate once. After calibration, keep your wheelbase consistent and let iRacing manage the car.

ACC: match the in-game steering lock to the car (ACC often expects a specific lock per car). If the in-game wheel doesn’t match your hands at full lock, fix the lock/rotation before changing FFB.

In more arcade-style titles, wheel support can vary. If a game doesn’t feel right on wheel, a stable rig still helps because it lets you drive with smaller, cleaner inputs without fighting flex.
