Tactile feedback is one of the highest “immersion per euro” upgrades in sim racing. The problem: many people set it up once, turn everything on, and end up with a constant rumble that masks useful detail.

This guide helps you build a readable tactile setup using SimHub: clear effects, sensible frequency ranges, and clean mounting strategies. Use it as a starting point, then tune to taste.

Start with the principle: tactile should be informative

Your shakers should tell you something:

  • Are the tyres slipping?
  • Did ABS activate?
  • Did you hit a kerb?
  • Is the engine at high RPM?

If every effect is always active, nothing stands out.

Where to mount shakers (and what each location feels like)

Seat / seat rails

Best for: engine RPM, gear shift thumps, rear slip. The sensation is “in your body”.

Pedal area

Best for: ABS, front lock-up cues, kerbs through the front axle.

Chassis corners (4-corner setups)

Best for: left/right cues, kerbs per wheel, road texture. This is the most “informative” but also the most complex.

Rig note: tactile works best on a rigid cockpit. Flex absorbs vibration and turns detail into mush. Sport and Pro tiers are ideal because they are built for high loads and clean cable routing, which keeps a tactile build serviceable.

Frequency ranges that often work well (starting points)

Every transducer behaves differently, but these ranges are a good baseline:

Effect Suggested frequency band Why
Engine RPM 20–55 Hz Low-frequency rumble feels natural and not “buzzy”.
Gear shift thump 60–100 Hz A short, punchy hit that stands out.
Kerbs 45–90 Hz Kerbs should feel textured, not like a subwoofer.
ABS 30–60 Hz Fast pulsing that you can feel in the brake foot area.
Wheel slip 35–75 Hz Helps you detect loss of traction early.

A workflow that prevents “everything vibrating”

  1. Enable only one effect (engine or kerbs) and tune it until it feels right.
  2. Set a high-pass/low-pass so effects stay in their lane.
  3. Match gains so one effect doesn’t drown out everything else.
  4. Add one new effect and repeat.

Gain staging and clipping

Just like force feedback, tactile can “clip”. If you drive over kerbs and everything feels the same intensity, reduce the gain in SimHub and/or your amplifier so the system has headroom.

Clean cabling for tactile builds

Tactile adds a lot of cables. A clean build is not just aesthetics; it prevents intermittent issues.

  • Use service loops near amplifiers
  • Strain relief at every connector
  • Route signal cables away from power cables where possible
