One reason people love Sim-Lab and other aluminium profile rigs is that they feel “industrial”. But that only happens when the rig is built correctly.
A profile rig can be extremely stiff—and still feel bad if it’s assembled out of square, unevenly tightened, or left with small joints that move under load. The result is:
- squeaks and creaks,
- tiny wheel mount movement,
- pedal deck drift,
- and constant micro-adjusting.
This guide gives a practical assembly sequence you can use on a Sim-Lab GT1 Evo/GT1 Pro/P1X style rig, and it applies equally well to SIMGASM cockpits.
Tools and prep (do this before step 1)
- Sort hardware into small containers (M6, M8, washers, T-nuts).
- Have a tape measure and a small spirit level.
- Work on a flat floor if possible.
If you’re building a colour-matched setup, handle the profiles carefully during assembly. SIMGASM’s coatings are designed to be durable and easy to clean, but any profile rig can be scratched if you drag steel plates across it. Lay down a towel or cardboard where you work.
Step 1: build the base “loose” first
The biggest mistake is tightening bolts too early. Instead:
- Assemble the base frame with bolts snug, not tight.
- Install crossmembers and corner brackets snug.
- Only tighten fully after the entire base is assembled.
This gives you room to square the frame accurately.
Step 2: square the base using diagonal measurements
Measure the diagonals of the rectangular base:
- Front-left to rear-right
- Front-right to rear-left
Adjust the frame until the two measurements match. This matters more than “it looks straight”. A base that’s out of square can make the wheel mount feel inconsistent and can cause squeaks under load.
Step 3: tighten in a sequence (like wheel nuts)
When the base is square:
- Tighten one corner, then the opposite corner.
- Work in a pattern around the rig.
- Re-check diagonal measurements after tightening.
This reduces the risk of pulling the frame out of square while tightening.
Step 4: uprights and wheel mount: stop flex before it starts
Uprights are where leverage shows up. Tips:
- Make sure both uprights are the same height and parallel.
- Keep the wheelbase as close as practical to the uprights (less leverage).
- Tighten upright joints evenly—one loose joint can dominate the feel of the entire rig.

Step 5: pedals: mount rigidly, then tune ergonomics
Brake force will reveal weak mounting. Once the pedal deck is rigid, tune the angle and spacing.
Two high-impact tweaks:
- Add a stable heel reference like the heel plate.
- Route pedal cables with strain relief so they don’t pull on connectors.

Step 6: re-torque schedule (this is normal, not a flaw)
Profile rigs “settle” after the first few sessions. Vibration and load cycles can seat brackets and washers. Plan a re-torque:
- after 2–5 hours of driving,
- again after 10–20 hours,
- and then occasionally when you change hardware.

My rig squeaks. Should I use grease or thread locker?
Start with the basics: re-torque everything and confirm the frame is square. Many squeaks come from micro-movement at a joint, not from “dry metal”. Only add products when you’ve confirmed the underlying joint is stable.
How tight is “tight enough”?
Firm and consistent. Over-tightening can damage T-nuts and slots. If you don’t have a torque wrench, focus on consistency and re-check after a few sessions.
