Rain changes everything. The fastest wet drivers are not “braver” — they are better at reading grip and more disciplined with inputs. In iRacing, rain also introduces new variables like evolving puddles, changing rubber build-up, and visibility challenges in traffic.
This guide is a practical wet-weather toolkit: where to drive, how to brake, how to manage traction, and how to set up your rig so you can repeat good inputs.
Wet driving starts before Turn 1
- Mindset: your goal is not hero laps; it’s keeping the car in a performance window for a whole stint.
- Inputs: smooth steering, progressive brake release, and patience on throttle.
- Consistency: the driver who makes fewer “half spins” usually wins in the wet.
Find the grip: the “alternate line” rule
In the dry, the racing line is grippy because rubber is laid down. In the wet, that rubber often becomes slippery. That’s why wet pace is usually found:
- One car-width off the normal line on entry and mid-corner
- On clean asphalt (less rubber build-up)
- Around standing water (avoid puddles; hydroplaning kills braking)
Braking in the wet: slow hands, earlier brake, smoother release
Think of braking in three phases:
- Initial pressure: build more slowly than in the dry.
- Peak braking: use less peak force. In the wet, “100%” often locks or triggers ABS too aggressively.
- Release: release earlier and smoother. A sudden release unloads the front and causes understeer.

Throttle and traction: treat it like a volume knob
- Short-shift if the car spins the rears easily.
- Unwind steering before you add meaningful throttle.
- Use “maintenance throttle” (small %) to stabilise the car rather than a big punch.
Visibility and reference points
In the wet, classic braking boards can be hard to see. Use bigger references:
- Start-of-kerb, end-of-kerb
- Asphalt seams
- Marshals posts, fencing
