A great pedal set can feel average if it’s mounted poorly. A modest pedal set can feel fantastic if the mounting angle, spacing and heel reference are dialled in.
This guide is written for Sim-Lab cockpits (GT1 Evo and P1X variants) and any aluminium profile rig. The goal is simple: make your braking repeatable.
The three pedal setup goals
- Comfort: your ankle and knee should not feel strained after 30 minutes.
- Repeatability: your foot returns to the same position every time.
- Stability: nothing shifts when you hit peak brake force.
Step 1: Set your heel reference first
Most inconsistent braking comes from a moving heel point. When your heel floats, your brain struggles to judge brake pressure.
Two easy fixes:
- Make sure the pedal plate is rigid and fully tightened.
- Add a dedicated heel support surface like the heel plate so your feet have a consistent “home”.
Step 2: Find the right pedal angle for your driving style
Pedal angle is not about “comfort only”—it changes how you apply pressure.
GT-style posture (most common)
- Moderate pedal angle.
- Heel stays planted more often.
- Brake is usually short and firm (load cell style).
Formula-style posture (more reclined)
- Pedals are often higher relative to hips.
- More ankle articulation is common.
- Heel support becomes even more important.
If you’re changing posture often, lock your seat angle first, then adjust pedals—not the other way around.

Step 3: Dial in pedal spacing (and why “wider” isn’t always better)
Spacing depends on discipline and your hip/knee alignment.
- GT / road cars: slightly wider spacing can feel natural and relaxed.
- Formula: often closer spacing, more “centered” feel.
- Rally: depends on whether you left-foot brake and how you mount a handbrake.
Start with neutral spacing, then adjust in small changes. Big changes often create new problems (knee pain or ankle strain).
Step 4: Stabilise the pedal deck under peak force
When you hit the brake hard, the pedal deck sees leverage. If it flexes or slides, your brake reference changes lap to lap.
Checklist:
- All bolts torqued and re-checked after a few sessions.
- No “single bracket” supporting a long pedal plate without bracing.
- Pedal cables have strain relief (so they don’t pull on the pedals).

Step 5: Connect pedal feel to technique
Once the pedals are physically stable, your technique improvements “stick”. Two examples:
- Trail braking: smoother pressure release is easier when your heel point is stable.
- Threshold braking: repeatable peak pressure comes from consistent body position.
