Fanatec wheelbases can feel incredible—but they can also feel “wrong” if a few settings are off. The most common complaints are:
- Clipping: force feedback feels strong but flat (no detail).
- Oscillation: the wheel shakes on straights or when you let go.
- Harsh impacts: curbs or bumps feel like hits rather than information.
- Inconsistent feel between cars: one car feels fine, another feels heavy or numb.
This guide explains what causes these issues, how to fix them in a repeatable workflow, and why cockpit rigidity is part of the solution.
A 10-minute diagnostic routine
Use one car and one track you know well. Then:
- Drive one lap and note the problem (flat feel, shake, harshness).
- Stop and change one setting only.
- Drive the same corner again and compare.
This sounds slow, but it prevents you from “tuning in circles.”
1) Clipping: when “more force” becomes less information
Clipping happens when the force feedback signal hits its maximum and can’t express additional detail. The wheel feels strong, but you lose nuance—especially during high-load corners and big compressions.
Signs of clipping:
- Cornering force feels like a single constant weight.
- You can’t feel small grip changes near the limit.
- Everything feels “heavy” but not informative.
Fix it like this:
- Lower in-game overall FFB until the wheel regains detail.
- Then adjust Fanatec overall strength to your comfort.
- Only then adjust filters like INT and damper.

2) Oscillation: why the wheel shakes on straights
Oscillation is usually a combination of:
- Too little damping/friction for the wheelbase’s torque,
- High centering forces in-game (Center Spring too high),
- A wheel that is very “free” around center,
- Flex in the cockpit that creates a feedback loop.
Practical fixes in order:
- Add a little NDP (Natural Damper) in the Fanatec tuning menu.
- Add a small amount of NFR (Natural Friction) if needed.
- Reduce excessive in-game Center Spring.
- Check wheel mounting and cockpit stiffness.
Tip: if you can stop the shake by gripping the wheel harder, you don’t need “more power”—you need a little more damping and a stiffer mounting solution.
3) Harsh impacts and “spiky” feel
If curbs feel like hits, you’re usually running too much sharpness in the signal:
- Reduce FEI slightly.
- Lower in-game road feel if it’s too aggressive.
- Increase INT slightly only if the signal is noisy (but keep it low for detail).
4) Inconsistent feel between cars
This often happens because different cars generate different steering torques in-game. If you tune to one car, another may clip or feel too light. Two solutions:
- Use a slightly lower in-game overall FFB and rely on the wheelbase for strength.
- Create two profiles: “detail” and “stability,” and switch depending on the car category.
Why cockpit rigidity is part of the fix
Flex is a hidden filter: it absorbs detail and can introduce wobble. If your wheel mount twists, you’ll chase settings forever.
