Simagic Alpha EVO 9, 12 or 18 Nm: which to buy?

Simagic Alpha EVO 9, 12 or 18 Nm: which to buy?

Simagic Alpha EVO 9, 12 or 18 Nm: which to buy?

For most drivers, the Simagic Alpha EVO 12 Nm is the sweet spot: strong enough for GT, formula and endurance racing, with plenty of fine detail. The Alpha EVO Sport 9 Nm suits newer drivers and lighter rigs, and it is the only one of the three with side mounting. The Alpha EVO Pro 18 Nm is for drivers who want high torque headroom and a rig that is stiff enough for it. All three share the same low inertia 5 pole motor, 21 bit encoder and active cooling, so the main differences are torque, size, weight and mounting.

That makes the choice easier than it looks. Below, we compare the three bases in plain words and show which rig each one needs.

What do the three Alpha EVO bases share?

The core technology is the same on all three, which is good news for your choice.

Motor, encoder and cooling

Every Alpha EVO base uses a custom 5 pole servo motor with low inertia. Low inertia means the motor reacts fast and does not feel heavy when the car snaps sideways. The 21 bit encoder splits one full turn into more than two million steps, so tiny steering inputs come through clearly. Active cooling keeps the force steady in long races. Each base also has an integrated slip ring and 11 expansion ports with CAN, USB and CAN FD support, and all three run on SimPro Manager on PC.

Same wheels, same adapters

Simagic wheels such as the GT Neo, FX Pro and GT1 family fit all three bases. Third party rims with a 6x70 mm pattern fit too, with the right adapter, as explained in can you use other wheels on a Simagic base. So a wheel you buy today moves with you if you upgrade the base later.

How do the 9, 12 and 18 Nm bases differ?

Torque, size and mounting options are the three numbers that matter.

Alpha EVO Sport 9 Nm

The Sport measures 281 x 130 x 110 mm and weighs 6,236 g without quick release. It supports bottom and side mounting. Nine newton metres feels strong for a first direct drive base. You feel kerbs, weight transfer and slides clearly, without the wheel being tiring in long sessions.

Alpha EVO 12 Nm

The 12 Nm has the same body size and weight as the Sport, but supports bottom and front mounting instead of side mounting. It adds Simagic's Dynamic Force Domain Filter in SimPro Manager. The extra torque gives you headroom: you run the base at a lower percentage and still have force left for big hits, so the fine detail stays clean instead of clipping.

Alpha EVO Pro 18 Nm

The Pro is longer at 317 x 130 x 110 mm and heavier at 8,627 g. It supports bottom and front mounting. Eighteen newton metres is a lot of force, so most drivers run it well below maximum. The benefit is control in heavy cars and very quick, sharp reactions. The trade off is that your rig must stay rock solid under that load.

Our founder Johan Akkerman has driven at a high level for years. He won the 2019 Project CARS 2 world team championship with VP Gaming and later raced on a Simucube 2 base. His view on torque is practical: more torque is only useful if the rig does not flex, because flex turns detail into a vague, rubbery feel.

Which rig does each Alpha EVO base need?

The base and the frame work as one system, so match them before you buy.

Matching the base to a SIMGASM cockpit

The SIMGASM compatibility charts make this simple. The Alpha EVO Sport 9 Nm and the Alpha EVO 12 Nm both work on the Hobby, Club, Sport and Pro tiers. The Alpha EVO Pro 18 Nm starts at the Club tier and also fits the Sport and Pro, as you see in the Alpha EVO Pro 18 Nm compatibility overview. The charts reflect the torque tier; mounting hardware for your chosen mount still needs a separate check. Compare all frames in our sim racing cockpit range, and read our guide to the best cockpit for a Simagic Alpha for more mounting tips.

Why the frame matters so much

SIMGASM cockpits include patented designs developed around strength, ergonomics and comfort, and every product is tested as part of a complete simulator. That matters with direct drive. On a stiff frame, a 12 Nm base feels sharper than an 18 Nm base on a frame that twists. The SIMGASM Hobby aluminium sim racing cockpit, our best selling model, is a popular partner for the 9 Nm and 12 Nm bases.

So which Alpha EVO should you buy in 2026?

A short checklist helps you decide in a minute.

A simple buying guide

Choose the 9 Nm Sport if you are new to direct drive, want side mounting or race mostly casual and rally titles. Choose the 12 Nm if you want one base for years, race GT, formula or endurance and like headroom without extra weight. Choose the 18 Nm Pro if you drive heavy cars, want maximum headroom and have a Club, Sport or Pro frame. If you still compare brands, our article on Simagic vs Simucube and VRS explains which specs you really feel. Ready to choose? Questions and answers

These are the questions we hear most when drivers choose an Alpha EVO.

Is 9 Nm enough for sim racing?

Yes, for most drivers. Nine newton metres gives clear detail and strong feedback. You only miss headroom in heavy cars or at very high force settings.

Does the Alpha EVO Pro fit a Hobby cockpit?

No. The SIMGASM compatibility chart lists the Alpha EVO Pro 18 Nm from the Club tier upwards, so pick a Club, Sport or Pro cockpit.

Which Alpha EVO supports side mounting?

The Alpha EVO Sport 9 Nm supports bottom and side mounting. The 12 Nm and 18 Nm Pro support bottom and front mounting.

Do the Alpha EVO bases work on PlayStation or Xbox?

SIMGASM lists all three Alpha EVO bases as PC hardware, so plan your setup around a PC.
