Do you need an H shifter for AC EVO free roam?

Do you need an H shifter for AC EVO free roam?

No, you do not need an H shifter for AC EVO free roam. Paddle shifters on your wheel work fine, and the game handles the clutch for you with its driving aids. An H shifter with a clutch pedal does make classic and older road cars feel the way they really drive, and on a relaxed drive through the Eifel that adds a lot of fun.

So the real question is how you want to drive. Below we explain when an H pattern shifter is worth it, when a sequential shifter or paddles make more sense, and where to mount it on your simulator.

When is an H shifter worth it in free roam?

It depends on the cars you choose and the kind of driving you enjoy most.

Classic road cars come alive with a manual gearbox

Many road cars in Assetto Corsa EVO have a manual gearbox in real life. With an H shifter and a clutch pedal you select every gear yourself, just like in the real car. Rolling through a village in third, then dropping to second for a tight bend, feels far more natural than tapping a paddle.

Johan Akkerman, founder of SIMGASM, knows that feeling from real racing too. Next to his esports career he won the DNRT BMW E30 Cup championship, a series with classic manual BMWs. That is why SIMGASM cockpits leave room for a shifter right from the start.

Paddles are fine for modern supercars

Modern supercars use dual clutch gearboxes with paddles behind the wheel. Think of the Lamborghini Temerario from the free roam trailer. For these cars an H shifter adds nothing, and paddles are the real thing. If you mostly drive modern performance cars on the Eifel free roam roads, you save the money for now.

H pattern or sequential shifter for AC EVO?

Both shifter types have a clear role, and each suits a different group of cars.

What an H pattern shifter gives you

An H pattern shifter has a gate with a slot for each gear. You need a clutch pedal to use it properly, so check that your pedal set has three pedals. The reward is full control: you choose when to shift, how fast you release the clutch and when to match revs with a heel and toe blip. Our H pattern shifter and clutch setup guide explains calibration and the bite point step by step.

What a sequential shifter gives you

A sequential shifter moves forward and back, one gear at a time. It suits rally cars, older race cars and drivers who like a physical lever without the clutch work. Many shifters switch between both modes. Compare popular models in our guide to Moza HGP vs SGP shifters, or browse current shifters and handbrakes.

Fabien Lacaule, who handles buying and distribution at SIMGASM, has driven rally and off road sims since 2017. Off road routes in free roam make a handbrake a nice next step after the shifter.

Where should you mount a shifter on your rig?

A good shifter in a bad position feels worse than paddles, so placement comes first.

Find the right height and distance

Sit in your normal driving position with your hands on the wheel. Drop your right hand to the side. The shifter knob should sit close to where your hand lands, roughly at the height of the wheel rim bottom and just behind it. You should reach every gear without leaning forward or twisting your shoulders.

Test fourth and sixth gear in particular, because those slots sit furthest away. If you hit the seat or your leg, move the shifter outwards or raise it slightly. Small changes of a few centimetres make a big difference over a long drive.

Keep the shifter mount stiff

A shifter takes hard, quick hits, especially when you rush a downshift. A wobbly mount makes gear changes vague. Every SIMGASM Hobby includes the Core side profile shifter and handbrake arm, mounted to the 40 x 40 mm aluminium frame. The Core side arm also works on other SIMGASM cockpits and monitor stands.

SIMGASM tests every product as part of a complete simulator, with the shifter, wheel and pedals in place. That way you know the frame holds steady when a gear change and a hard braking zone come together. Once your shifter sits right, tune the wheel with our guide on FFB settings for road cars in AC EVO.

Questions about shifters in AC EVO free roam

These short answers cover what most drivers want to know before they buy a shifter.

Does AC EVO support an H shifter?

Yes. You map the gears of your H shifter in the controls menu and use a clutch pedal for cars with a manual gearbox.

Do you need a clutch pedal for an H shifter?

For the real experience, yes. Without a clutch you rely on the automatic clutch aid, which removes much of the fun of a manual car.

Is a sequential shifter better for free roam?

Only if you mostly drive rally or older race cars. For classic road cars an H pattern feels more authentic.

Where does a shifter go on a SIMGASM cockpit?

On the side profile arm next to the seat. The Hobby includes the Core side profile shifter and handbrake arm as standard.
