No, the Thrustmaster T598 does not strictly need a cockpit. Thrustmaster built it for desks and for cockpits, so it runs fine on a table with a desk mount. Still, a rigid cockpit gets much more out of it. The T598 delivers 5 Nm of constant torque with up to 100 percent overshoot, so short peaks reach about twice that force. A desk or a light stand flexes under those peaks, and that flex hides the detail you paid for.

A normal desk holds a laptop and a coffee, not sideways loads. When the T598 sends a sharp kerb effect, the desk top twists a little. You feel that twist as a soft, vague wheel instead of a crisp hit. Thrustmaster adds high frequency torque through its HARMONY technology, so you feel small road details. Those small details are exactly what a flexing desk absorbs.
The pedals slide away
The Raceline Pedals LTE that come with the T598 use non slip pads. On a hard floor they mostly stay in place. On carpet, or with a firm brake spring, the set slowly creeps forward while your chair rolls back. After ten laps your driving position differs from lap one, and so does your braking point.

What does a cockpit add to the T598?
A cockpit locks the wheel, the pedals and the seat into one fixed triangle.
One frame for wheel, pedals and seat
In a cockpit, the wheelbase, the pedals and the seat bolt to the same frame. The distance between them never changes. You set your position once, and every session starts exactly the same. That consistency matters more for your lap times than one extra newton metre of torque.
Rigidity keeps the force feedback clean
The T598 uses a Direct Axial Drive motor without cogging and with a latency of 5 ms, according to Thrustmaster. That fast and smooth signal only reaches your hands when the mount stays still. Is a wheel stand enough for a T598?

Better than a desk, weaker than a frame
A good wheel stand holds the T598 firmer than a desk and folds away after a session. Many T598 owners on Reddit start this way, especially in small apartments. The weak spot is the seat. You still race from a chair that moves, and many stands bend at the wheel deck when the overshoot kicks in.
When a stand still makes sense

How strong does a T598 cockpit need to be?
The T598 is a mid power direct drive, so a heavy pro frame is not necessary.
Enough reserve, no overkill
