Direct drive stopped being a luxury this year. Entry bundles now put five to eight Nm on your desk, and flagship bases push past twenty five Nm. That shift moved the bottleneck. The motor is no longer the limit in most setups. The frame under it is.

So the question changed too. Drivers used to ask how much torque they should buy. In 2026 the smarter question is how much chassis that torque deserves. Get this pairing wrong and you lose exactly the detail you paid for.

Where does force feedback detail disappear?

A direct drive motor sends sharp, fast signals straight into the wheel deck. Those forces have to go somewhere. In a rigid frame they push against the floor and come back to your hands. In a soft frame they bend the beam first.

That bending acts like a filter. The big forces survive, so the wheel still feels strong. The small ones vanish. Kerb texture, the first hint of understeer, the moment a rear tyre starts to go light. You feel a blunt version of the car, and you brake later than you should because the warning never arrived.

Why profile depth matters more than the brand badge

Aluminium profile is quoted by its cross section. A 40 x 40 mm beam, a 40 x 80 mm beam, a 40 x 120 mm beam, a 40 x 160 mm beam. Those look like small steps on a spec sheet. They are not.

Bending stiffness scales with the cube of the depth. A 40 x 160 mm rail is not twice as good as a 40 x 80 mm rail. It sits in a different class entirely. Matching torque to a cockpit tier

The SIMGASM range maps onto this ladder in a clean way. Hobby uses a 40 x 40 mm main profile and is rated for wheel bases up to 16 Nm. Club moves to 40 x 80 mm with a 200 kg rated braking load at the pedal deck. Sport uses 40 x 120 mm and Pro uses 40 x 160 mm, both rated at 300 kg, with Pro adding heavy duty steel reinforcement at critical mounting points.

Read those two numbers together. Torque tells you what the wheel deck has to resist. Braking load tells you what the pedal deck has to resist. A strong base with light pedals still needs a stiff wheel deck, and a modest base with hydraulic pedals needs far more chassis than the torque figure suggests.

Does more torque always feel better?

No, and the industry finally admits it. Signal quality, motor control behaviour and software tuning now carry as much weight as peak numbers. A clean twelve Nm base on a rigid frame often beats a twenty five Nm base on a frame that moves.

Mass helps too. Pro weighs around 45 kg and Sport around 39 kg before you add a seat and hardware. That mass absorbs vibration instead of passing it into the floor, which is one reason heavier chassis feel calmer under peak torque.

The pedal deck is the forgotten half

Everyone checks the wheel mount. Far fewer people check the pedal deck. Yet braking is where most lap time is found, and a load cell measures pressure rather than travel.

If the deck dips a few millimetres under a hard stop, your pressure curve changes every lap. Consistency disappears. A reinforced deck with multiple mounting points keeps that curve repeatable, and that is what separates a good braking zone from a lucky one.

Your seat plays a part here as well. Braking force travels from your foot through the pedal deck, into the frame and back through the seat into your body. A seat that moves under braking makes a rigid deck feel soft, which is exactly why seats creak and shift under load.

How to choose without overspending

Start with the base you own today. Then ask what you plan to own in two years. If those answers differ by more than five Nm, buy the higher tier now. Frames outlive wheel bases by a wide margin.

How many Nm can an entry cockpit handle?

The SIMGASM Hobby is rated for wheel bases up to 16 Nm. Above that figure you want a deeper profile, because the wheel deck starts carrying loads it was not designed to absorb.

Will a stiffer frame change my force feedback settings?

Often yes. Drivers usually lower damping and filtering after moving to a rigid chassis, because the detail no longer needs help getting through. Retune your profile after the upgrade rather than copying old settings.

Does a desk clamp work with direct drive?

Only at low torque, and only for a short time. Clamps concentrate force on a thin surface and the desk flexes long before the base does. A dedicated frame is the first real upgrade for any direct drive owner.

Is 300 kg of rated braking load excessive?

Not for strong load cell or hydraulic pedals. Peak braking pressure combines your leg force with your body pushing back into the seat, so the deck sees far more than the number on your pedal software.
