Can you move a sim rig to another room?

Can you move a sim rig to another room?

Yes, you can move a sim rig to another room, and with an aluminium profile frame it is easier than most people think. For a short move inside the same floor, two people carry the bare frame once the seat, wheelbase and screens are off. For stairs, a narrow door or a move to a new house, you split the frame into a few large sections and rebuild it in the new spot with the same settings.

The key is planning. A rig that is moved without a plan loses its driving position, and that costs you laps of muscle memory. Below you find a clear step by step method, plus the numbers that tell you how heavy and how big each part is.

How heavy and how big is a sim rig to move?

Before you lift anything, it helps to know what you are dealing with in size and weight.

Footprint of the four SIMGASM frames

The SIMGASM Hobby measures 500 × 1270 × 580 mm (W × L × H). The Club measures 500 × 1350 × 620 mm. The Sport and Pro are both 580 mm wide and 1320 mm long, with a height of 720 mm and 750 mm. A standard interior door is often around 780 to 830 mm wide, so the bare frame of every tier passes through on its side or at an angle.

Where the weight really sits

The frame alone is manageable for two people. The real weight comes from what you bolt on: a direct drive wheelbase, a seat, load cell pedals and a monitor stand. That is why you strip the rig first. Our guide on how much a sim racing rig weighs gives you more detail per part.

Step by step: moving your rig to another room

Follow these steps in order and your rig arrives in the new room with the same feel it had before.

1. Mark your driving position

Put a small piece of tape on the profile at the edge of every bracket: wheel deck, pedal deck, seat brackets and shifter arm. Take photos from the side and from above. Aluminium profiles slide freely once a bolt is loose, so tape marks are the fastest way to find your old position back.

2. Remove the hardware

Unplug all cables and remove the wheelbase, pedals and seat. Put the bolts of each part in a separate labelled bag. Leave the brackets on the frame where possible, so you keep the reference points.

3. Carry the frame flat and with two people

Lift the frame at the main profiles, not at the wheel deck or the shifter arm. Those parts are built for force from your hands, not for the full weight of the frame. On stairs, tilt the frame lengthwise and let the lower person guide it.

When should you take the frame apart?

For a bigger move, splitting the rig into sections is safer than carrying it in one piece.

Narrow stairs, attics and moving house

If the frame does not fit through a door or up the stairs, loosen the corner brackets and separate the base into its front and rear parts. The SIMGASM frames are bolted, not welded, so every joint comes apart with the tools from the box. Every frame ships with assembly hardware, tools, white assembly gloves and an assembly guide, so keep those in a box for moving day. The Hobby assembly guide also works in reverse when you take the frame apart.

Protect the finish

Wrap each profile in a blanket or bubble wrap. Coloured frames such as gold, orange or green show scratches more than black, and a scratch on a corner is visible from the seat. Use the white gloves when you rebuild, so the finish stays clean.

Should you make your rig movable instead?

If you move the rig often, for example between a living room and a hobby room, a movable setup saves time every week.

Caster wheels let you roll an aluminium sim rig away after a session. The trade off is a little less stability under hard braking, so always pick lockable wheels. Read whether caster wheels make sense before you buy them. In the new room, a rubber mat under the feet keeps the frame in place on a hard floor; see how to stop a rig from sliding.

SIMGASM founder Johan Akkerman has tested cockpits at product events and international exhibitions for years, where frames are built up and taken down again every few days. That experience shows in simple details such as bolted joints and clear assembly steps. If you have a question about your specific move, the team answers by email at hello@simgasm.com, usually within one business day.

Questions and answers

Here are quick answers to the most common moving questions.

Does a sim rig fit through a normal door?

The bare frame of all four SIMGASM tiers is 500 to 580 mm wide, so it fits through a standard interior door. Turn it on its side if the seat brackets stick out.

How many people do I need to move a rig?

Two people for the bare frame. Remove the wheelbase, seat and screens first and carry those separately.

Will I lose my seating position?

Not if you mark every bracket with tape and take photos before you start. Slide the brackets back to the marks and your position is the same.

Do I need to retighten bolts after a move?

Yes. Check every bolt after the first session in the new room, because joints settle a little after transport.
