Understeer and oversteer are the two words you will hear forever in sim racing. The good news: you do not need an engineering degree to fix them. You just need a structured approach.

First: define the moment it happens
Ask yourself: when does the car misbehave?
- Entry (braking and turn-in)
- Mid-corner (steady throttle)
- Exit (throttle application)

Understeer fixes (car won’t rotate)
Entry understeer
- Brake a touch earlier and release brake more smoothly
- Reduce steering angle; the tyre has limited grip (grip circle)
- Try a slightly later apex to open the corner
Mid-corner understeer
- Check speed: you might simply be entering too fast
- Hold a stable throttle; avoid “on-off” inputs
- In GT cars, small brake bias adjustments can help rotation
Exit understeer
- Apply throttle later but more decisively
- Unwind steering before adding power
- If TC is too low, wheelspin can feel like understeer (the car won’t accelerate)
Oversteer fixes (rear steps out)
Entry oversteer
- Brake in a straighter line
- Reduce aggressive downshifts; engine braking can destabilize
- Move brake bias slightly forward if the rear locks
Mid-corner oversteer
- Be smoother with steering: sharp inputs load the rear suddenly
- Check rear tyre temps/pressures (overheated rears slide)
Exit oversteer
- Roll into throttle more gradually
- Increase TC slightly until you can apply power cleanly
- Use higher gears to reduce torque spikes
The “one change rule” for setups
If you change three things at once, you learn nothing. When you adjust setup:
- Change one parameter
- Run 3–5 laps
- Write down what improved and what got worse
