Shifter and handbrake placement looks like a small detail—until you start drifting, rallying, or driving endurance stints where every reach must be repeatable. The good news: aluminium profile rigs make it easy to mount peripherals exactly where your hands expect them, and to change layouts when you switch disciplines.
This guide focuses on Fanatec-compatible layouts, but the principles apply to any shifter/handbrake combo.
Start with one rule: your shoulder should not move
When you shift or pull the handbrake, your shoulder should stay mostly in place. If you need to lean, rotate, or lift your shoulder, you will lose steering precision and build fatigue fast. Your cockpit’s job is to keep everything within a natural reach.
Two popular layouts: rally vs drift
Layout A: rally and road cars (H-pattern priority)
Rally and classic road cars often feel best with an H-pattern shifter placed:
- close to your hip,
- slightly forward (so you don’t pull your shoulder back),
- high enough that your wrist stays neutral.
On a SIMGASM cockpit, a clean approach is a side mounting arm such as Core side mounting arm (or Apex side mounting arm if you want extra rigidity for heavier peripherals). Aluminium profile lets you move the whole shifter module in small increments until it feels like your real driving position.
Layout B: drifting (handbrake priority)
For drifting, the handbrake is used aggressively and often. Most drivers prefer:
- handbrake closer to the wheel (shorter reach),
- slightly higher than the shifter,
- angled so the pull is natural without twisting the wrist.
If you drift often, consider mounting the handbrake and shifter on separate rails so you can tune spacing precisely. Aluminium profile is ideal for this because you can adjust without drilling new holes.
H-pattern vs sequential: where to place each
- H-pattern: best slightly lower and closer to your hip, because the motion is larger and you want stability.
- Sequential: can sit a bit higher and closer to the wheel, because the motion is short and frequent.
If you switch between rally and GT racing, you can keep one “anchor” mounting position and swap the accessory or plate, instead of rebuilding the whole side of the rig.
Right hand vs left hand use
Think about your dominant hand and the cars you drive. Many right-handed drivers like a right-side shifter, but some rally drivers prefer the handbrake on the opposite side to reduce steering disruption. A profile rig gives you the freedom to experiment and keep the best layout once you find it.
Why cockpit stiffness matters for handbrakes
Handbrakes create sideways forces that can twist weak cockpits. If your mount flexes, your pull becomes inconsistent, and that shows up as unpredictable rotation in the car.

Peripheral placement only works if the seat and wheel are correct first. A simple order:
- Choose your seat (comfort: Core Recline seat, locked-in: Atlas GT seat or Atlas Formula seat).
- Set wheel height and reach.
- Set pedals and braking comfort.
- Only then mount shifter and handbrake.
A 10-minute placement test you can do today
- Sit in your normal driving posture and place your hand on the wheel.
- Without looking, reach for the shifter position you think you want.
- If your shoulder moves, bring it closer or raise it slightly.
- Repeat for the handbrake: pull 10 times and check if your wrist stays neutral.
- Drive one lap and adjust only one dimension (height, distance, or angle) at a time.
A clean control zone makes you faster
Rally and drift sessions involve lots of quick changes (camera, traction control, replays, restarts). Add a simple workflow zone:
- keyboard swivel mount and mouse tray for quick adjustments.
