SIMGASM Sport or Pro: is a 40x120 profile enough for you?

For most serious sim racers, a 40x120 profile is enough. The SIMGASM Sport handles wheelbases above 26 Nm and up to and including 40 Nm, carries a rated braking load of 300 kg at the pedal deck and is ready for motion. Choose the Pro with its 40 x 160 mm profile when your wheelbase goes above 40 Nm, when you want the maximum number of add ons, or when you plan a combined race and flight simulator.

So the real question is not "which one is stronger". The Pro is stronger. The question is whether you need that extra headroom. In the short showcase below, you see the SIMGASM Pro in purple from every angle, so you get a feel for the bigger frame before you compare.

What is the main difference between Sport and Pro?

The main difference is the size of the main beam. The Sport uses a 40 x 120 mm profile. The Pro uses a 40 x 160 mm profile and adds heavy duty steel reinforcement at critical mounting points. A taller beam bends less, so the Pro gives you more structural reserve.

Many other features are the same. Both tiers carry a rated braking load of 300 kg at the pedal deck. Both have integrated cable routing, and both are ready for motion. So you do not pick the Pro for cable slots or motion support. You pick it for extra strength and more room to grow.

When is 40x120 enough?

SIMGASM gives a clear torque guide. Up to 26 Nm, the Club with its 40 x 80 mm profile is enough for most people. Between 26 Nm and 40 Nm, you choose Sport or Pro. Above 40 Nm, you choose Pro. For a wheelbase in the common 8 to 25 Nm range, the Sport already gives you a big safety margin.

The sim racing community on Reddit says much the same. In one thread comparing both sizes, the top answer said that without motion, 120 is more than enough, and that even with motion, 120 still does the job. Another user called 40x160 the choice for people who "want to over engineer". Our direct drive torque guide helps you see where your own wheelbase fits.

How does the Sport feel with VR and motion?

Here is a good real world example. SIMGASM founder Johan Akkerman, a former Project CARS 2 world team champion and a real world racing champion, races on a SIMGASM Sport at home. He combines it with the Formula Atlas seat, virtual reality and motion. He mostly drives Formula 1 cars from the 1960s and 1970s, which move around a lot and ask for precise feedback.

That tells you something important. A motion system adds its own forces to the frame. If the Sport works for the person who designed the full range, it works for most home setups too. Planning VR? Our ACC VR settings guide helps you get a smooth image.

When should you choose the Pro instead?

Choose the Pro in three cases. First, your wheelbase delivers more than 40 Nm. Second, you want to mount the maximum amount of extras, such as big screens, keyboards, button boxes and several shifters. Third, you plan to build a combined race and flight simulator with a yoke or throttle quadrant.

In those cases, the extra height of the 40 x 160 mm beam and the steel reinforcement give you peace of mind. You find the full range on the SIMGASM Pro cockpits page. For everyone else, the Sport is the smarter balance of strength, size and adjustment.

What about tactile feedback and bass shakers?

Bass shakers send vibration into the frame. On a light rig, that vibration spreads everywhere and feels messy. On a stiff 40x120 frame, the effects stay sharp and local, so you feel the kerb under the seat and the ABS in the pedal. Both Sport and Pro handle shakers very well. The trick is clean mounting, which we explain in our bass shaker tuning guide.

A simple way to decide

Ask yourself three questions. Is my wheelbase above 40 Nm? Will I mount flight controls? Do I want the absolute maximum number of add ons? If you answer no to all three, pick the SIMGASM Sport. If one answer is yes, the Pro is the safer choice.

Both models belong to the patented SIMGASM cockpit design family, developed in Wijk bij Duurstede in the Netherlands. Curious how both frames are built and tested? Read how a high torque sim racing cockpit is developed and tested.

Questions about SIMGASM Sport and Pro

Is the SIMGASM Sport strong enough for 25 Nm?

Yes. The Sport is recommended for wheelbases above 26 Nm and up to and including 40 Nm, so a 25 Nm base has plenty of reserve.

Do Sport and Pro have the same braking load?

Yes. Both tiers carry a rated braking load of 300 kg at the pedal deck.

Is the Sport ready for motion?

Yes. Both Sport and Pro are motion ready and have integrated cable routing.

What does C160 mean?

C160 refers to the Pro model with its 40 x 160 mm main profile. The Sport is the C120 with a 40 x 120 mm profile.
