Sim racing latency checklist: reduce input lag, stutters and random disconnects

If your sim feels “off” even when FPS looks fine, you may be fighting latency: small delays between steering/braking and what you see on screen. The fix is usually not one magic setting. It is a chain: PC, USB, display, and cabling.

This checklist is designed to be practical. Work top to bottom and stop when the problem is solved.

1) Define the symptom

  • Input lag: steering feels delayed, especially in fast direction changes
  • Micro-stutters: tiny frame-time spikes that break rhythm
  • Random disconnects: wheel or pedals drop out mid-session

2) Display and frame-time first

  • Set your monitor to its maximum refresh rate in Windows
  • Use a frame cap slightly below refresh rate for stability (for example 117 on a 120Hz screen)
  • Prioritize stable frame-time over maximum graphics

3) GPU driver and Windows settings

  • Use a high-performance power plan
  • Disable USB selective suspend (important for wheels and pedals)
  • Disable aggressive PCIe power saving if you see stutters
  • Keep drivers updated, but avoid changing multiple drivers on race day

4) USB topology: the hidden cause of many issues

High-end sim hardware can draw more power and bandwidth than typical devices. A wheelbase, pedals, shifter, handbrake, button box, and headset can overload a single hub.

Practical rules

  • Plug wheelbase directly into the PC when possible
  • Use a powered USB hub for secondary devices
  • Avoid long USB cables without active repeaters
  • Keep USB cables away from power bricks where possible

5) Cabling and strain relief

Many “random” disconnects are not software. They are physical: a tight cable bend, a connector that moves, or a cable that is pulled when you turn the wheel.

6) Rig stability (yes, it affects latency)

A flexy wheel mount can feel like latency because your hands move before the wheelbase sensor “moves”. A rigid cockpit reduces that “rubber band” sensation and makes input feel direct.
