Sim racing FOV guide: set your camera and field of view correctly

Field of view (FOV) is one of the biggest “free upgrades” in sim racing. When it is correct, your brain reads speed and distance more accurately, you hit apexes more consistently, and the car feels easier to place.

When it is wrong, you get common problems: braking too early, missing apexes, feeling “slow”, or feeling like the car is unstable. The good news is that you can fix most of this with measurement and a few settings.

What FOV actually is

FOV is the angle of the world that the game shows on your screen. It is not a “preference slider” in the same way as volume. It is linked to:

  • your monitor size
  • your eye-to-screen distance
  • your screen layout (single, ultrawide, triples)

The simple FOV method that works

  1. Measure your eye-to-screen distance (in cm).
  2. Measure your screen width (not diagonal).
  3. Use an FOV calculator (or the in-game tool) to set the correct value.

If you want a rough rule of thumb: moving the monitor closer usually improves realism and peripheral awareness more than increasing FOV.

Example FOV values to sanity check your setup

These examples assume your eyes are roughly centred to the screen:

  • 27" 16:9 at 60 cm: often lands around ~50–55° horizontal FOV
  • 32" 16:9 at 60 cm: often lands around ~55–60° horizontal FOV
  • 49" ultrawide at 70 cm: often lands around ~60–70° (varies by aspect ratio)

Do not chase the exact number. Use it as a check: if you run 110° on a single 27" screen, your view will likely be distorted and distances will feel wrong.

Camera settings that matter after FOV

Once FOV is correct, focus on these camera adjustments:

  • Seat position: put the virtual wheel roughly where your real wheel is.
  • Horizon level: keep the horizon stable; excessive pitch/roll can make you inconsistent.
  • Look-to-apex / head movement: keep it low for competitive racing, higher for immersion.
  • Mirror placement: adjust so you can see cars without turning your head.

Why monitor mounting affects your FOV

FOV is only “correct” if your monitor is positioned consistently. If the screen angle shifts or your monitor stand flexes, your eye line changes and your view feels different. This is why stable monitor mounting is part of performance, not just aesthetics.

SIMGASM offers two monitor stand families:

  • Core integrated stands: clean, directly mounted to the rig, supporting up to four monitors (up to 34" depending on configuration).
  • Apex stands: also available freestanding, with integrated cable passthrough for a clean build.

Common FOV mistakes and quick fixes

  • Mistake: using “too wide” FOV to see more.
Fix: move the monitor closer and use the correct FOV. You gain visibility without distortion.
  • Mistake: sitting too far away.
Fix: bring the monitor stand closer and raise the screen so your eyes sit near the top third of the display.
  • Mistake: incorrect cockpit alignment.
Fix: centre the monitor to your seating position, not to the room. The steering column should be centred to your body.

Triples and bezel correction, in one minute

If you run triple monitors, two extra settings matter:

  • Monitor angle: most triple setups land between 50–65° for the side screens. The goal is that the side screens face your eyes, not the room.
  • Bezel correction: this removes the “jump” when objects move across monitor bezels. Use it if your sim supports it, but always re-check your FOV afterwards.
