Sim racing cockpit for sale: what to check first?

Sim racing cockpit for sale: what to check first?

When you see a sim racing cockpit for sale, check five things first: the profile size, the rated braking load at the pedal deck, the wheel mount options for your wheelbase, what is included in the box and the footprint in your room. These five points tell you more than any photo or price tag.

A cockpit looks simple on a product page. But two frames that look alike feel very different once you brake hard or turn up the force feedback. This checklist helps you compare offers fast and buy the right frame the first time.

Check the profile size first

The profile is the backbone of the frame, so start your check here.

Aluminium profiles are named by their cross section. A 40 x 40 mm profile is square. A 40 x 80 mm profile is twice as tall, and a 40 x 160 mm profile is four times as tall. A taller profile bends much less under the same force. In practice you feel this as a calm wheel deck and a pedal plate that does not move when you stamp on the brake.

What do the four SIMGASM tiers use?

The SIMGASM Hobby uses a 40 x 40 mm main profile. The Club uses 40 x 80 mm, the Sport 40 x 120 mm and the Pro 40 x 160 mm. So you read the stiffness class of every sim racing cockpit for sale in the range right from its spec sheet.

Look at the rated braking load

Braking puts the biggest force into a cockpit, so this number matters a lot.

A load cell brake measures pressure, so you press hard instead of far. If the pedal deck flexes, your brake feels soft and your lap times jump around. Look for a rated braking load at the pedal deck in the specs. SIMGASM lists 150 kg for the Hobby, 200 kg for the Club and 300 kg for both the Sport and the Pro. If a seller does not list a number at all, ask for it.

Check the joints too

A strong profile with weak corner brackets still flexes. Look for metal brackets with wide contact plates. The Pro adds heavy duty steel reinforcement at the critical mounting points for this reason.

Match the wheel mount to your wheelbase

A frame only works when your wheelbase bolts on securely, so check the mount before anything else in your cart.

There are three common mount types. A bottom mount bolts under the base. A front mount holds the base by its front face, which suits high torque bases. A side mount clamps the base from the side. SIMGASM offers a Bottom Mount, Front Mount, Side Mount and a dedicated Asetek Front Mount, with a model level table on each product page. Note that the regular Front Mount does not fit any SIMAGIC wheelbase. If you drive a MOZA R5, our guide to the best cockpit for the MOZA R5 shows a clear example.

Read what is included

Two offers with a similar price are often not the same deal, so compare the contents line by line.

Some cockpits include a seat, others do not. Some include a shifter arm, a heel rest or rubber feet. SIMGASM does not include the seat or the seat slider, but every frame ships with the wheel mount you choose, the tools, assembly gloves and a side profile arm for a shifter or handbrake. Read our full breakdown of what comes in the box with a sim racing cockpit to compare fairly.

Measure the footprint and check the seller

The last two checks are about your room and about the people behind the product.

Measure your floor first. The Hobby is 500 mm wide and 1270 mm long. The Sport and Pro are 580 mm wide and 1320 mm long. Then add room for your seat, your screen and a path to get in. Our guide on space for a sim racing cockpit walks you through it.

Finally, look at who designs the frame. SIMGASM founder Johan Akkerman worked as a technical specialist and workshop manager for brands like Mercedes Benz and Jaguar before he moved into sim racing. He also won real championships, like the DNRT BMW E30 Cup in 2023 and 2024. That background shows in the details. Customer reviews help too: SIMGASM shows an average of 4.97 stars from 199 reviews on its site.

Questions and answers about buying a cockpit

These short answers cover the questions that come up most before people order.

Is a used cockpit a good idea?

It is possible, but check the profile slots, the brackets and the bolts for damage. Missing parts are hard to replace on some brands.

What matters more, profile size or brand?

Profile size and braking load tell you more about stiffness. The brand matters for support, fit and finish.

Does a SIMGASM cockpit include a seat?

No. Seats and seat sliders are sold separately, so you choose your own seat.
