Steam is great for convenience, but it can add an extra layer of input “help” that sometimes breaks wheels and pedals in brand-new games. If your Forza Horizon 6 steering feels wrong, your pedals are swapped, or an axis is inverted, this guide is for you.
Below is a step-by-step workflow that solves the most common FH6-on-Steam issues without guessing. Start at the top and stop as soon as the problem is fixed.
Quick symptoms this guide fixes
- Throttle and brake are swapped (gas acts like brake or vice versa).
- Handbrake is “on” by default and turns off when you pull it.
- Steering or pedals work, but they are inverted.
- Force feedback direction feels wrong (wheel pulls into the corner instead of self-centering).
Step 1: confirm your wheel is supported
Before you spend time on Steam settings, confirm your wheelbase is actually on the supported list (or has partial support) and update firmware/drivers. Start here:
Step 2: reduce “variables” (USB, hubs, other controllers)
For troubleshooting, make your setup boring:
- Plug the wheelbase directly into the PC (avoid USB hubs for now).
- Disconnect extra controllers you don’t need (gamepads, flight sticks, etc.).
- Reboot once after installing new drivers.
Step 3: fix incorrect axis mapping in FH6 on Steam
If your axes are mapped incorrectly or inverted, FH6 allows you to adjust Steam-side input mapping files. Here is the safe workflow:
- In your Steam Library, right-click Forza Horizon 6 and select Properties.
- Go to Local Files and select Browse.
- Open the media folder.
- Copy inputmappingprofiles.zip somewhere safe as a backup.
- Unzip inputmappingprofiles.zip.
- In the inputmappingprofiles folder, find the DefaultRawGameControllerMapping file that matches your wheel (for example: DefaultRawGameControllerMappingProfile ThrustmasterTX458.xml).
- Add the appropriate DInput attribute(s) to fix what you are seeing (examples below).
- Re-zip inputmappingprofiles.zip.
- Launch FH6 and test again.
Which DInput attribute should you use?
- DInputIndex fixes the case where a control is mapped to the wrong axis (for example, throttle activates the brake).
- DInputInvertAxis flips an axis that is working but inverted (for example, a handbrake that is “on” by default).
- DInputFFBInvertAxis flips the force feedback direction if it feels reversed.
Important: the axis number you see in-game can be one higher than the number used in the mapping file. If you change Axis 3 in-game, it can be Axis 2 in the file.
Step 4: use in-game invert options when possible
Before you edit files, check FH6’s Advanced Controls menu for invert toggles (steering, throttle, brake, force feedback invert). This is often the quickest fix.
If you want a clean baseline after the wheel is mapped correctly, use our FH6 wheel setup guide to set deadzones, rotation and force feedback without over-tuning.
Step 5: make sure your cockpit doesn’t sabotage your inputs
Many “input problems” are actually physical problems: pedals sliding forward, chair rolling away, wheel clamp shifting mid-corner. A proper rig removes those variables so you can diagnose settings with confidence.
- Entry level stability: SIMGASM Hobby aluminium simulator (40x40 profile) is built to give beginners a real cockpit feel at a very low price.
- Most versatile “do it all” rig: SIMGASM Club aluminium simulator (80x40 profile) is a safe choice for almost any wheel and pedal set on the market.
- High torque and motion ready: SIMGASM Sport aluminium simulator (120x40 profile) adds more adjustability, a stronger wheelmount and built-in cable passthrough channels for clean installs.
- Flagship stiffness: SIMGASM Pro aluminium simulator (160x40 profile) is our flex-free platform for extreme loads, heavy braking and long endurance sessions.
Two simple accessories that improve day-to-day FH6 driving (especially on PC) are a stable keyboard and mouse mount:
