Can you use a sim racing cockpit for flight sim?

Yes, you can use a sim racing cockpit for flight sim, as long as you plan where the yoke, stick, throttle and rudder pedals go. Rudder pedals sit on the pedal deck almost like racing pedals. A yoke needs a stable flat surface in front of you, and a stick or throttle needs a solid arm at the side. An aluminium profile cockpit makes this easy, because you bolt brackets anywhere along the slots of the frame.

Below you learn how a racing rig turns into a flight setup, which parts fit where and which SIMGASM cockpit gives you the most room to do both. We explain each step in plain words, so the switch between driving and flying feels simple.

How racing and flying share one frame

Both hobbies need the same thing: a body position that stays put while your hands and feet work the controls.

What stays the same

The seat, the base frame and the pedal deck do double duty. You sit in the same seat, your feet rest in the same area and the screens stay in front of you. That is why many sim racers on Reddit and flight forums build one rig for both. You only change the controls, not the whole setup.

What changes

A racing wheel sits at chest height on a wheel deck. A yoke sits in a similar spot but pulls back and forth, so it needs a firm surface that does not flex under that load. A flight stick and throttle usually sit beside your legs, closer to the seat. That side position is where a cockpit with side profiles shines.

Where each flight control goes

Each control has a natural spot on an aluminium profile frame.

Rudder pedals on the pedal deck

Rudder pedals are the easiest part. They sit flat on the pedal deck, where your racing pedals normally live. Many flyers simply lift the racing pedals off and place the rudder pedals in their spot. Check the bolt holes of your rudder pedals against the deck, or use a flat plate between them.

A yoke in front of you

A yoke such as the MOZA MFY or the Honeycomb Alpha clamps or bolts to a flat edge. On a cockpit, the area of the wheel deck or a plate mounted between the uprights takes over that job. Make sure that surface is stiff, because every pull on the yoke loads it backwards.

Stick and throttle at the side

A flight stick or throttle needs a solid side arm. SIMGASM cockpits come with a side profile mounting arm for a shifter and handbrake: the Core arm on the Hobby and Club, and the Apex arm on the Sport and Pro. That same side position suits a throttle quadrant or a stick on a mounting plate. Check the bolt pattern of your device before you buy extra plates.

Which SIMGASM cockpit suits racing and flying?

The best tier depends on how many devices you plan to mount at the same time.

Club for a balanced combo

The Club uses a 40 × 80 mm main profile and measures 500 × 1350 × 620 mm. It gives a solid base for a wheel, a yoke and rudder pedals while staying compact. That makes it a smart middle ground for players who switch between hobbies.

Sport and Pro for a full setup

The Sport moves to a 40 × 120 mm profile, raises the rated braking load at the pedal deck to 300 kg and adds integrated cable passthroughs. With a flight base, a racing wheelbase and several USB devices, those passthroughs keep the cables tidy. The Pro adds a 40 × 160 mm profile with steel reinforcement at critical mounting points for the heaviest builds, including motion.

Tips for a quick switch between modes

A smart layout saves you time every evening.

Use quick release and marks

Use the quick release of your racing wheel to remove the rim when you fly. Mark the position of your racing pedals on the deck with a small piece of tape, so they return to the exact same spot. Our guide on button box layout and mounting also helps you place extra panels without blocking your knees.

Plan the cables once

Flight setups use more USB devices than racing. Route each cable along the profile and leave a little slack at every moving part. That prevents disconnects in the middle of a landing or a race.

Built and tested as a complete simulator

A mixed setup only works when the frame is designed as a whole.

At SIMGASM, every product is tested as part of a complete simulator rather than as an isolated component. Fabien Lacaule, who handles compatibility, partners and European distribution at SIMGASM, has been active in sim racing since 2017. SIMGASM also stocks MOZA and Honeycomb flight peripherals, such as yokes, flight sticks and rudder pedals, next to its own cockpits. The team works from Wijk bij Duurstede in the Netherlands and answers questions by email or WhatsApp, usually within one business day.

Questions about flight sim on a racing rig

These short answers cover the questions we hear most.

Do rudder pedals fit on a sim racing pedal deck?

In most cases, yes. Rudder pedals sit flat on the deck. Check the bolt holes, or use a flat plate between the pedals and the deck.

Where do I mount a flight stick on a cockpit?

Mount it at the side, next to your leg, on a solid side arm with a mounting plate. That is the same area where a shifter or handbrake normally sits.

Which SIMGASM tier suits a combined racing and flight rig?

The Club suits a balanced combo. Choose the Sport or Pro when you run many devices and want integrated cable passthroughs.
