Brake pedal elastomer tuning: travel, stiffness and consistency for faster laps

A load cell brake is not about “how hard you can push”. It’s about how consistently you can hit the same pressure, lap after lap. Elastomer tuning is one of the most underrated ways to make that happen.

This guide explains how to tune brake feel using elastomers, springs, travel and pedal geometry — without turning your rig into a science project.

Why elastomers matter more than people think

Elastomers shape your brake in three ways:

  • Initial bite: how quickly pressure builds at the start of the pedal
  • Mid support: the “platform” you lean into for trail braking
  • End-stop: how hard the pedal gets near maximum braking

Pick your goal first: GT vs formula feel

  • GT-style feel: slightly more travel and a progressive build helps modulation and comfort over long stints.
  • Formula-style feel: shorter travel and a firmer end-stop can feel faster and more direct (but can be tiring if too stiff).

Brake travel: the “sweet spot” for most drivers

Most people are fastest with enough travel to modulate, but not so much that the pedal feels vague. If you are constantly locking or triggering ABS, you often need more control, not more stiffness.

Rig geometry makes or breaks brake tuning

Before you swap elastomers, check these:

  • Seat distance: you want a slight knee bend at full brake.
  • Heel support: a stable heel pivot improves fine control. Add a heelrest or heel plate depending on your layout.
  • Pedal deck stability: any movement turns your “pressure memory” into chaos. Use a rigid cockpit like SIMGASM Club simulator or above.

Moza CRP2 brake tuning example

If you’re using Moza CRP2 load cell pedals, start with a medium stiffness stack and then tune in this order:

  1. Calibrate the load cell to your realistic max push (a value you can hit repeatedly, not once).
  2. Adjust travel so you have a clear modulation window.
  3. Adjust stiffness only after you can hit consistent pressures.

How to tune in 20 minutes (no guesswork)

  1. Pick one track and do 10 laps.
  2. Note one braking zone where you struggle (lockups, overshoot, inconsistent trail braking).
  3. Change one thing: either add a little travel or change one elastomer step.
  4. Repeat 5 laps and compare.

Common mistakes

  • Too stiff too soon: you lose modulation and rely on ABS/lockups.
  • Calibrating to “max ego force”: you can’t repeat it. Calibrate to repeatability.
  • No heel pivot: your ankle can’t modulate smoothly.
