Most “wheel settings” guides fail because they start with numbers instead of a strategy. The goal is not “maximum force”. The goal is maximum information at a force level you can repeat for hours.

This article gives you a simple Asetek tuning strategy that works across sims, and that plays perfectly with a rigid, adjustable profile rig like SIMGASM aluminium rigs.

The strategy in one sentence

Use your wheelbase torque as headroom, then tune the sim to avoid clipping. If you feel you need heavy damping to make the wheel manageable, fix the mounting/rig first.

Step 1: decide your “on-hands” torque target

Here’s a practical range most sim racers can live with:

  • Everyday sprint racing: ~7–10 Nm on hands
  • Endurance / long sessions: ~6–8 Nm on hands
  • Very heavy steering preference: ~10–12 Nm (for strong drivers who like effort)

With a 12 Nm base, that might mean running 70–85% strength. With an 18–27 Nm base, it might mean running 40–65% and using the extra headroom to keep detail.

Step 2: build two profiles (sprint and endurance)

Instead of constantly retuning, make two baseline profiles inside your wheelbase software:

Profile What it should feel like What you change
Sprint Responsive and detailed, a little heavier slightly higher strength, slightly less damping
Endurance Calm, easy to hold, predictable over kerbs lower strength, slightly more stability

Then you adjust in-game gain per sim or per car. This keeps your muscle memory stable.

Step 3: set the simulator so it never clips

Clipping is when the sim asks for more force than your wheelbase can output at your chosen strength level. It turns detail into a flat “wall” of force. The fix is simple: lower gain until the worst kerb hits and high-speed compressions don’t slam into the limit.

  • In iRacing, set wheel force correctly (12 / 18 / 27 Nm depending on your base), then use Auto per car.
  • In ACC, reduce global gain until the FFB meter rarely turns solid red.

Step 4: don’t “tune around flex”

If your wheelbase is mounted on a flexible deck, you’ll often add damping or friction to hide the movement. That makes the wheel feel heavier, but it can also make it less informative.
