Asetek mounting guide: front mount vs bottom mount

Asetek mounting guide: front mount vs bottom mount

Asetek mounting guide: front mount vs bottom mount

Mounting is where a premium wheelbase becomes either precise and calm or noisy and fatiguing. With Asetek, mounting matters even more because the platform is detailed and responsive: any flex in your wheel deck, uprights, or fasteners shows up as vague turn-in and inconsistent road feel.

This guide explains the practical difference between front mounting and bottom mounting, how to decide which is right for you, and which SIMGASM mounts and rigs make the process clean.

Front mount vs bottom mount: what actually changes?

Mount type Best for What you feel What can go wrong
Front mount High torque DD, maximum rigidity, clean wheel height/angle adjustment Sharper initial response, less “twist” feeling on big steering loads Needs a solid front plate and correct alignment so the wheel sits at the right height
Bottom mount Lower torque builds, simpler plates, easier to adapt to different bases Still great if the plate is thick and braced Thin plates can resonate, and small flex gets amplified by high FFB detail

Why adjustable aluminium rigs make mounting easier

On a fixed steel cockpit, you often “work around” the frame. On a modular profile rig, you build the cockpit around your body and hardware.

With SIMGASM aluminium rigs, you can:

  • set wheel height and tilt precisely (shoulders relaxed, wrists neutral),
  • position the base close enough without cramping your knees,
  • upgrade from bottom mount to front mount later without replacing the rig,
  • route cables cleanly (especially on tiers designed for it).

A clean Asetek mounting path on SIMGASM

Here’s a simple approach that works for most builds:

  1. Pick the rig tier that matches your torque and upgrade goals (more on this in the rig-tier guide below).
  2. Start with a stable base mount like SIMGASM Wheelmount base set so you can get driving quickly.
  3. Move to a dedicated front mount when you want the most rigidity and adjustment range: SIMGASM Front Wheelmount + Asetek front wheelmount bracket.
  4. Add side plate support if you’re building a very stiff assembly: large wheelmount side plates.

If you want a practical build walkthrough (seat first, wheel placement, cable routing), continue with Asetek front mount setup on SIMGASM rigs.

Mounting checklist (the details that prevent headaches)

  • Use proper fasteners: correct bolt length, washers where needed, and torque them evenly.
  • Square the wheel: mount the base so the shaft points at your sternum, not your face or lap.
  • Brace the uprights: the “wobble” most people feel comes from upright movement, not the wheelbase.
  • Check cable slack: leave service loops so the wheel can adjust without pulling connectors.

If you struggle with USB disconnects or intermittent issues, cable routing is often the real fix (not a new hub): Sim racing cable routing guide (service loops and strain relief).

Mounting is also ergonomics (don’t skip this)

The fastest way to make a great wheelbase feel “wrong” is putting it in the wrong place. Before you finalize bolts, sit in your seat and do this quick check:

  • Elbows: slightly bent at full lock (not locked straight).
  • Shoulders: relaxed, not hunched forward.
  • Wheel height: roughly at mid-chest; if it’s too low you’ll load your wrists.
  • Wheel angle: small tilt that keeps wrists neutral; avoid extreme angles.

If you’re building a shared rig (multiple drivers), the adjustability of a profile cockpit makes this far easier. Add a seat that slides and reclines comfortably (the Core Recline seat is built for this style of use), and you can swap drivers without losing your baseline.
